Born in Berkeley, Dr. Cotteral received his doctorate in 1988 from the U.C. Berkeley School of Optometry and practiced for three years at a U.S. Army hospital in Germany, where he directed the eye clinic.
He has been a lecturer and clinical research optometrist at U.C. Berkeley, where he also completed a NIH fellowship investigating laser corneal reshaping.
Dr. Cotteral has completed extensive training to obtain certification in ocular therapeutics and glaucoma. He has been a partner with Kensington Optometry since 1994.
He has traveled to Guatemala to provide eye care to the needy, and has been a volunteer in the community with the Boy Scouts and at Kensington Elementary School.
Dr. Cotteral and his wife Gesine both play the cello and live in Kensington with their dog Bella. They have two grown children, Julia (25) and Martin (22). Julia is at pursuing a Masters in Nursing at San Francisco State University. Martin will be finishing his studies in Finance and Accounting at San Jose State University in 2017.
